The last Despatch addressed to your pre-
decessor on the subject of the Land Settlement in the New
Territories was Sir Henry Blake's Despatch No. 295 of the 18th.

Matters have undergone some alteration
since then and the present position is as follows.-
The two important cases referred to in
the 2nd. paragraph of that Despatch have not been referred
back to the Land Court to assess compensation, but the Govern-
ment has appealed against the decisions of the Land Court
under Ordinance No. 13 of 1903.
These appeal cases are about to come on
for hearing in the Supreme Court and should be settled shortly.
Mr. Gompertz has been employed since the
writing of the Despatch referred to above principally in
hearing some very large and important claims to foreshore and
seabed which were among the cases referred to in the 4th.
